Six Things You Can Do to Make Your Roof More Impervious to Precipitation

Posted on: 6 May 2021

One of the most important things your roof needs to do is prevent precipitation from penetrating your home. The following are six things you can do to make your roof more impervious to precipitation.

Make sure flashing is present and functioning where necessary

Flashing is an essential component of a roof when it comes to weatherproofing. Flashing is a material that forms a barrier around roof parts such as vents and chimneys. Flashing is made of impervious materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, and zinc alloy. Your roof is likely to leak if flashing is missing or damaged. Make sure that flashing is in good shape and is installed properly on your roof if you have new construction-like additions put on your home.

Never allow gutters or downspouts to empty onto a roof surface

If precipitation is allowed to pour down onto a roof surface from a gutter or downspout up above, a leak will eventually develop. If you have gutters on the upper floors of your building above roof parts, make sure that they are emptying into downspouts and/or lower-level gutters.

Have routine inspections done to check for missing components or damage

Over time, roof components including hardware and shingles could come loose. It's important to have inspections done on your roof once in a while to check for missing components. After inspection, necessary repairs can be done that prevent leaks from developing.

Make sure your gutters and downspouts don't become clogged

Precipitation will build up in clogged gutters and downspouts. This means that water could eventually overflow out onto your roof surface. Regularly cleaning gutters and downspouts prevents clogs. This is one of the most important things you need to do to prevent standing water on your roof surface.

Pay attention to your attic

It's easy to overlook your attic when you're focusing on roof leak prevention. However, the condition of your attic is important when it comes to sealing out precipitation. If your attic is not properly ventilated, moisture and heat can build up inside it. This can leave your home more susceptible to developing leaks due to ice dams or rust development in metal components of the roof itself.

Maintain a drip edge

The drip edge of a roof prevents precipitation from draining directly out over the roof edge and onto the fascia. You need to have a drip edge installed and maintained to direct water into your gutters and away from your roof edge.
