4 Reasons Your Shingles Blow Off Your Roof

Posted on: 26 October 2021

After a big windstorm, you will want to check your roof and ensure that no shingles were blown off, which is always a risk when big wind gusts storm through the area. There are a few reasons why your shingles may get blown off during a windstorm.

Reason #1: Incorrect Nail Pattern

When your shingles are installed, a specific nail pattern should be used to install the shingles. Most shingles have a specific strip where the nails should be installed. If the nails are not installed properly, including having an incorrect nail pattern, then your shingles are more likely to get pulled off during a strong windstorm.

Reason #2: Large Overhang

When your shingles are installed, it is common for them to overhang on the edge of the roof. If the overhang is too large, though, the shingles are more likely to be pulled off during a strong windstorm. This can be corrected by trimming the overhang or removing the overhang area and reinstalling the shingles in that space.

Reason #3: Lifespan

Another reason why your shingles may be coming off your roof is that your shingles are just reaching the end of their lifespan. Asphalt shingles are not made to last forever. It is common to get around two decades of usage out of them, but any more than that is pushing it. As the shingles age and get older, they don't have the same strength that they used to have, and the adhesive that you used to keep them in place starts to wear away over the years, making it easier for the shingles to come off when a strong storm comes your way.

Reason #4: Walking

If you walk on your roof frequency, that can damage the shingles on your roof. Shingles are designed to be flexible. However, they aren't developed for frequent human traffic. When you walk on your shingles, that can cause nails to pull up and out.

If you find that your roof is missing some shingles after a strong windstorm, get a roofing contractor out right away to repair your roof. Missing shingles can lead to water damage, which is very expensive to repair, so you want to replace those shingles as soon as possible. A roofing contractor will also let you know if you need to replace a large swatch of shingles to protect the integrity of your roof.
